Lethargic Dog: Why Your Dog Is Tired and Weak

Updated 2026-10-05. General information, not a diagnosis.

A dog that is tired after a long walk or a hot afternoon will bounce back after rest. A dog that stays dull, hides, or does not want to get up is telling you something is wrong.

Common causes of lethargy and weakness in dogs

  • Heat, exercise or a busy day
  • Tick fever (ehrlichiosis, babesiosis), common across India and spread by ticks
  • Infections and fever
  • Pain from an injury or joints
  • Anaemia, heart, kidney or liver illness
  • Poisoning

Only a vet who examines your dog can tell which one it is.

What you can do right now

  • Let your dog rest in a cool, shaded place with water
  • Check gently for ticks, especially around ears, neck and between toes
  • Look at the gums: they should be pink, not pale or white
  • Do not give any human medicine. Paracetamol (Crocin, Dolo), ibuprofen and many others are poisonous to dogs and cats, even in small amounts.
