Dog Diarrhoea and Loose Motion: When to See a Vet

Updated 2026-10-05. General information, not a diagnosis.

Loose motion is one of the most common reasons dogs see a vet. A single soft stool after a change in food is usually nothing. Diarrhoea that keeps going, has blood in it, or comes with vomiting or weakness needs a vet.

Book a vet visit today if

  • Streaks of red blood or jelly-like mucus in the stool
  • Also vomiting, not eating, or unusually quiet
  • A puppy, especially one not fully vaccinated, or an older dog
  • Going on for more than a day
  • Many watery motions in a few hours

Usually fine to watch at home for a day if

  • One or two soft stools after a food change or a treat
  • Eating, drinking and playing as usual
  • No blood, no vomiting

Common causes of diarrhoea (loose motion) in dogs

  • A change of food, or eating something unusual
  • Worms and other parasites such as Giardia
  • Bacterial and viral infections, including parvovirus in puppies
  • Stress, travel or boarding
  • Food intolerance or allergy
  • Poisoning, and illnesses of the gut, liver or pancreas

Only a vet who examines your dog can tell which one it is.

What you can do right now

  • Keep fresh water available. Dogs lose a lot of water with loose motion
  • Note how often it happens and what the stool looks like. A photo helps
  • Keep other pets from sharing the same bowl until a vet has checked
  • Do not give any human medicine. Paracetamol (Crocin, Dolo), ibuprofen and many others are poisonous to dogs and cats, even in small amounts.
